Frequently Asked Questions

Vehicle Impound Related Question

Q: How much will it cost to get my vehicle out of impound?
A: The cost varies based on several factors such as the impounding agency, the condition and circumstances of the impound (e.g., a driveable vehicle versus one involved in an accident), and the duration of storage. Additionally, some agencies may require a release before retrieving the vehicle. For an accurate estimate, please contact our office at 714-558-7645.

Q: What is a “Police Release” and why do I have to pay both the police department and G.S. California Towing?
A: A police release is a fee charged by the impounding agency to cover the costs of their officers and administrative staff. This fee is separate from G.S. California Towing’s charges, which cover towing, storage, and lien processing.

Q: What is the daily storage rate?
A: The daily storage rate depends on the impounding agency and currently ranges from $40 to $100 per calendar day.

Q: Can I collect my personal belongings from my vehicle before claiming it?
A: Yes, you can collect your belongings if the registered owner is present with valid ID. There is no fee for access during business hours, but an after-hours fee “Gate Fee” will apply if you come outside of business hours.

Q: What if the vehicle isn’t registered to me?
A: Only the registered owner can retrieve property or the vehicle. Exceptions include presenting a notarized statement or a power of attorney from the registered owner along with a valid ID. Without these, we cannot assist you.

Q: When can I claim my vehicle?
A: You can claim your vehicle anytime but be aware that an after-hours “Gate Fee” will apply if you come during holidays or outside normal business hours.

Q: What is an “After Hours Fee”?
A: This fee is an industry-standard charge included in law enforcement contracts. It covers the cost of bringing in personnel to assist with vehicle releases outside of regular business hours.

Q: Why was my vehicle impounded?
A: The reason for impoundment should be addressed by the impounding agency. G.S. California Towing simply assists law enforcement and does not enforce laws or grant releases. Contact the impounding agency for more information.

Q: What if I believe my vehicle was wrongfully towed?
A: If you believe your vehicle was wrongfully towed, start by contacting the impounding agency, especially if law enforcement directed the impound. For private property impounds, contact the property management.

Q: How long do I have to retrieve my vehicle from impound?
A: The duration depends on the reason for impoundment. It’s advisable to retrieve your vehicle as soon as possible to minimize storage fees. Vehicles left for over 30 days may undergo a lien sale process, after which G.S. California Towing may sell the vehicle to recover costs.

Q: Why is towing expensive?
A: Towing costs can seem high due to various operational expenses, including insurance, fuel, vehicle costs, and regulatory compliance. G.S California Towing maintains high safety and service standards, which contributes to our pricing

To recover a vehicle or personal items from a vehicle not owned by you, several options are available:

1. Obtain a power of attorney from the registered owner, granting you legal authorization.

2. The registered owner can access our website, www.gscaliforniatowing.com, and complete a simple release form.

3. Provide a notarized letter from the registered owner, giving you permission to retrieve the vehicle or personal items.

If your vehicle’s registration and insurance details are inside the vehicle at our tow yard and you cannot be present at our facility, follow these steps:

1. Download a duplicate vehicle registration from the DMV’s website at dmv.ca.org.

2. Request your insurance carrier to email you a copy of your insurance ID card.

Following these procedures will facilitate the efficient retrieval of the vehicle or personal belongings.
